Peter Obi Claims Thugs Block Humanitarian Visit in Benue

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, reported that his humanitarian visit to Yelwata, Benue State, was obstructed by "hired thugs" on June 2025. Obi arrived in Benue at approximately 9:00 a.m. to meet families affected by a massacre where over 270 people were killed.

He stated that his mission was purely humanitarian, aimed at mourning with the victims' families and offering comfort. However, his convoy was met with hostility, as thugs chanted, "Peter Obi, go back." Obi expressed concern over the alarming nature of the incident, emphasizing that the government should prioritize the protection of human life.

The Benue State Government, through Chief Press Secretary Kula Tersoo, denied awareness of Obi's visit and criticized the lack of security arrangements for him, suggesting that security agencies should have been informed. The governorship candidate of the NDC in Benue State, Prof. Terhemba Shija, was also mentioned in the context of the incident.
