HURIWA Calls for INEC Clarification on Tompolo's Donations

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has requested the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify the regulatory framework concerning the reported donations by High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, known as Tompolo, of more than 100 campaign vehicles to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. HURIWA noted that Tompolo donated 50 vehicles to Kano State, 44 to Borno State, 34 to Katsina State, and 25 to Taraba State for campaign activities.
While HURIWA is not alleging any illegality, they seek clarification on the campaign-finance rules regarding private donations, particularly concerning in-kind contributions. Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, HURIWA's National Coordinator, emphasized the importance of transparency in political financing to maintain public confidence in the electoral process.
He raised questions about the proper declaration of these donations and whether they meet the necessary campaign-finance limits and disclosure requirements under Nigeria’s electoral laws.
