Atiku Abubakar Promises to Restore Fuel Subsidy in 2027

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), announced his intention to restore the petrol subsidy if he wins the 2027 presidential election. During an interview on Wednesday, he expressed concerns over the funds saved after the subsidy removal, questioning their allocation and transparency.

Atiku stated, “I did not oppose the removal of the oil subsidy, but where is the money? Where did it go?” He emphasized that the savings should have been invested in poverty reduction and education.

He indicated that if elected, he would reinstate the subsidy and demand accountability from those who misappropriated the funds. Atiku also mentioned that he would consider removing the subsidy again if the funds were used transparently to address Nigeria's development challenges, including security, education, and youth opportunities.

President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of the petrol subsidy during his inaugural address on May 29, 2023.
