INEC Seeks Oba of Lagos' Support for 2027 Elections

On September 8, 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, visited the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Osuolale Akiolu, at Iga Idunganran, Lagos Island, to seek support for peaceful elections ahead of the 2027 General Elections. This visit concluded INEC's South-West Zonal Readiness Assessment and Staff Interactive Session.

Prof. Amupitan emphasized the critical role of traditional institutions in sustaining peaceful elections, stating, “Elections are civic celebrations of free choice, not contests of conflict or violence.” He made three requests: royal blessings for INEC leadership and staff, use of the throne’s influence to encourage voter registration and PVC collection, and advocacy for peace among community leaders. Oba Akiolu pledged support and urged politicians to engage citizens meaningfully, focusing on issue-based campaigning free from hate speech.

He also highlighted the need for discipline among youth and the duty of traditional rulers to inspire civic participation.
