Ondo APC Chieftains Defect Ahead of 2027 Elections

The release of candidates’ lists by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 general election has intensified a political crisis in Ondo State, leading to significant defections from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Several former members and chieftains are now pursuing elective offices under opposition platforms, including the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Notable figures include Tajudeen Adefisoye, contesting for the Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency seat on the SDP platform, and Prince Idowu Mafimisebi, who is running for the Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency seat under the PDP. The Mandate Elders Forum, led by Demola Ijabiyi, has expressed concern that these defections could undermine the APC's electoral strength, as these politicians possess substantial grassroots support.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has denied encouraging any departures and has called for unity within the party, despite criticisms of the APC's reconciliation efforts.
