Police Urge Political Parties to Avoid Violence in Sokoto

On Wednesday, Hayatu Shafa, the Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, issued a warning to political parties and their supporters regarding violence, hate speech, and other actions that could jeopardize the integrity of the 2027 elections. During a meeting with political party chairmen and representatives, Shafa urged for peaceful campaigning and cooperation with security agencies to ensure credible elections.

He emphasized that the elections should be viewed as a contest of ideas rather than a battle. Shafa outlined five key areas for engagement: peaceful conduct, accountability, zero tolerance for violence, cooperation with security agencies, and recognition of security challenges.

He warned party leaders that they would be held accountable for their supporters' conduct, including youth groups and social media influencers. Additionally, he cautioned against the destruction of campaign materials and the use of private security during rallies.

Shafa called for political parties to share information on potential threats and stressed the importance of protecting voters in areas affected by banditry. Haruna Adiya, the Sokoto State APC Chairman, expressed the party's commitment to comply with election laws.
