INEC Empowers Women Voters Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is focusing on increasing women's participation in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections through voter education and grassroots mobilization. Dr. Shehu Wahab, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Kogi State, made this announcement during a capacity building training workshop in Lokoja, organized in collaboration with the International Women Communication Centre (IWCC) and Civil Society Organizations.

The initiative aims to address challenges such as voter apathy and low participation of women. Trained volunteers will be deployed across five local government areas: Ankpa, Dekina, Ibaji, Kabba/Bunu, and Ofu, to enhance grassroots engagement.

Wahab emphasized the importance of integrity and civic duty among volunteers, urging them to educate women about their civic rights and the significance of their votes. Dr. Limota Goroso Giwa, Executive Director of IWCC, noted that fifty women were selected from these areas to promote gender inclusion in the electoral process and warned against electoral malpractices.
