Sokoto CP Bans Weapons at Rallies Ahead of 2027 Elections

Hayatu Hassan Shafa, the Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, has issued a ban on weapons and private security outfits at political rallies in preparation for the 2027 general elections. During a stakeholder meeting with political party representatives, Shafa warned against violence, hate speech, and fake news, urging political actors to engage in issue-based campaigns.

He outlined five key areas for political parties to focus on: peaceful conduct, accountability, zero tolerance for violence, cooperation with security agencies, and recognition of the state's security challenges. Shafa stated that party leaders would be held personally responsible for the actions of their supporters, including youth wings and social media influencers.

He also prohibited the destruction of campaign materials and emphasized that the Nigerian Police Force would enforce the Electoral Act 2022 impartially, warning that violations would lead to consequences. Shafa called for collaboration between political parties and security agencies to address emerging threats and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
