Ondo APC Faces Crisis Over 2027 Consensus Candidates

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State encountered a crisis during its National Assembly primaries as the attempt to establish consensus candidates for the 2027 general elections led to petitions, protests, and divisions within the party. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa convened a meeting at the Governor’s Lodge in Alagbaka, Akure, where consensus candidates were selected for three senatorial districts, nine House of Representatives seats, and 26 House of Assembly constituencies.

Endorsed candidates included Dr Taiwo Fasoranti, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, and Dr Isaacs Kekemeke for the Senate, among others.

However, many aspirants rejected the consensus model, arguing it contradicted the Electoral Act, which requires voluntary agreement. The situation escalated when the APC National Working Committee’s screening panel disqualified seven aspirants, including loyalists of Governor Aiyedatiwa, further intensifying the conflict.

The dissenting members, feeling sidelined, proceeded to contest the primaries, leading to a significant rift within the party.
