Igbo Group Urges Tinubu to Step Down for Obi in 2027

The Igbo Heroes and Icons Foundation (IHIF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to step down in favor of Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, for the 2027 election. This statement was made in response to the Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria (RHGN) campaign group's efforts to persuade Obi to withdraw from the race and support Tinubu's bid for a second term.

Mazi Franklin Ngoforo, RHGN's Deputy National Leader (South-East), announced plans to meet with Igbo leaders to discuss this proposal. However, IHIF's National Coordinator, Chinedu Nsofor, rejected the idea, asserting that Obi should be allowed to exercise his constitutional right to contest.

IHIF supports an Igbo presidency in 2027 and has adopted Obi as its candidate. Nsofor emphasized that the presidency's rotation has favored the North and South-West, while the Igbo have not had a sustained opportunity to lead since independence.

He argued that fairness and justice should guide the electoral process in Nigeria.
