Peter Obi Rules Out Solo Deal With Atiku on 2027 Alliance

NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi says any opposition coalition for 2027 must involve party-level negotiations, not personal arrangements between candidates.

Peter Obi, who heads the Nigeria Democratic Congress ticket for 2027, has firmly rejected any suggestion that he would unilaterally exit the race to back Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential hopeful. During an appearance on Arise Television, Obi made clear that discussions concerning a potential opposition coalition cannot be treated as merely a two-person compact, irrespective of the stature or influence either figure commands.

The ex-governor of Anambra emphasized that any such alignment would necessitate engagement from the political organizations themselves, not solely from individual contenders. His remarks highlight the conviction that institutional party mechanisms—rather than personal considerations or private negotiations among candidates—must spearhead conversations on opposition consolidation.

Obi also refuted claims circulating that he spurned an invitation to become Atiku's vice-presidential pick. He categorically stated no such overture was presented to him and reaffirmed his longstanding position: acceptance of a second-position slot from any 2027 contender is off the table.

Historically, these two politicians have crossed paths before. Obi stood beside Atiku as his running mate in 2019, subsequently emerging as the Labour Party's 2023 standard-bearer.

His latest pronouncements arrive as opposition groups deliberate consolidation possibilities for the upcoming elections, with party-structured engagement emerging as essential groundwork before any formal accord can materialize.
