SDP Chieftain Advocates for Section 21 Reinterpretation

Olusegun Babalola, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), articulated the significance of Section 21 of the Nigerian Constitution, asserting that it should be reinterpreted in light of the upcoming 2027 general elections. In a statement made on Friday, Babalola described this reinterpretation as a crucial achievement that aligns with the objectives outlined in Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution.

He argued that Nigeria's failure to integrate its traditional systems into modern governance structures has weakened the country's political legitimacy and economic growth. Babalola emphasized that Section 21 mandates the state to protect, preserve, and promote Nigerian culture, which he believes has been misinterpreted over the years.

He criticized the current interpretation as merely preserving cultural displays like dance and art festivals, rather than embedding indigenous principles into governance. This discussion was reignited by Adewol Adebayo, the SDP presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, during his acceptance speech at the party's presidential convention in Bauchi on May 9, 2026.
