NiMet Issues Severe Weather Alert for 23 States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a severe weather alert for 23 states in Nigeria, warning of thunderstorms, strong winds, and moderate rainfall expected on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 5:50 PM to 11:50 PM local time. Severe thunderstorm cells have been detected over parts of Cameroon and several Nigerian states, including Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, and Bauchi.

The weather system is anticipated to move westward, potentially affecting additional states such as Taraba, Jigawa, Kano, and others. NiMet cautioned that strong winds could precede the thunderstorms, posing risks of damage to unsecured objects and weak structures.

Localized flash flooding is possible, particularly in low-lying areas. Motorists are warned that rainfall may reduce visibility and create slippery roads.

NiMet advised residents to secure outdoor items, avoid open spaces during storms, and monitor official forecasts for updates. The alert also follows a prior warning from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) regarding the imminent release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
