Carpenter Sentenced to 9 Years for Raping 13-Year-Old

Emmanuel Sanya, a 37-year-old carpenter, was sentenced to nine years in prison for the rape of a 13-year-old girl, whose name has been withheld, in Ikeja, Lagos. The sentencing occurred on Thursday, April 21, 2024, with Justice Abiola Soladoye presiding over the case.

The judgment followed a plea bargain agreement that amended the three-count charge of sexual assault against Sanya. The incident took place when the survivor's father had sent her to collect N5,000 from Sanya.

During the visit, Sanya forcibly undressed the girl and attempted to penetrate her despite her resistance. After the assault, Sanya threatened the girl not to disclose the incident, promising to provide her with anything she wanted.

The survivor eventually confided in her mother, leading to the matter being reported to the police, which resulted in Sanya's arrest. The charges against him included unlawful sexual intercourse, contrary to Section 144 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Cap C17, Vol 3, 2015.
