African Leaders and Dangote Launch $16bn Refinery in Kenya

On September 30, five African heads of state participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for a $16 billion oil refinery project in Lamu, Kenya, hosted by Kenyan President Dr William Ruto. The ceremony included notable figures such as Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Industries Limited, and Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The refinery, expected to process 700,000 barrels of oil per day upon completion in 40 months, aims to boost Africa's self-sufficiency in processing raw materials. Dangote emphasized the need for Africa to industrialize and not rely on imports for essential products.

The refinery will source oil from neighboring countries, including Uganda and South Sudan. Initially planned for Tanzania’s Tanga, the site was moved to Lamu due to its deeper waters and solid ground suitable for heavy equipment.

Delegates from other East African nations, including Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania, also attended the ceremony.
