Low Voter Turnout in Anambra Local Government Elections

The Anambra State Local Government election was marked by low voter turnout in Awka North and Awka South Local Government Areas, despite the timely arrival of voting materials. The All Progressives Grand Alliance was the sole party to present candidates in 20 out of 21 LGs, with the Young Progressives Party fielding candidates only in Anambra East.

Observers noted the presence of officials from the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) and security personnel at polling centers. Although there were no movement restrictions, the low turnout was attributed to residents engaging in normal business activities.

CP Nnanna Ama led the election security monitoring patrol, ensuring a peaceful environment for voters, while Olatunde Maku, Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, reported that the election remained peaceful. Voting commenced at various polling units, including Modebe Primary School and Central School in Onitsha South, but turnout remained low.
