70% of Major Crimes in Kano Linked to Drug Abuse

Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, the Chairman of the Kano State Joint Task Force Committee on Drug Abuse, revealed that approximately 70% of major crimes in Kano are associated with substance abuse. During a press engagement in Kano, he referenced police statistics showing that the Kano State Police Command made around 3,080 arrests for major crimes last year, with about 70.2% of these cases linked to drug abuse.

Rimin Gado emphasized that addressing drug abuse could have prevented many of these crimes. The committee was established following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s declaration of a state-wide public health emergency concerning substance abuse.

Its mandate includes combating illicit drug trafficking, rehabilitating victims, and prosecuting offenders. The strategy involves not only enforcement but also prevention, rehabilitation, and community engagement.

Rimin Gado warned against violent groups related to drug abuse and stated that the government would utilize legal provisions to prosecute individuals threatening public peace and security.
