Kano Governor Bans Illicit Drug Sales, Imposes Curfew

On Wednesday, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State signed executive orders that ban the sale, trafficking, and abuse of illicit substances across the state. The orders, which took immediate effect, also impose movement restrictions between 6 pm and 10 am in identified drug abuse hotspots.

Yusuf described drug abuse as a significant threat to public safety, security, and social stability in Kano. He inaugurated the Multi-Agency Anti-Substance Abuse Task Force to enforce these directives, which include empowering security agencies to stop, search, arrest, and prosecute offenders.

Properties used for illicit drug activities risk forfeiture through the revocation of their Certificates of Occupancy. The orders were issued under Section 97A of the Kano State Penal Code Law, Cap 89 of 1991.

The task force is tasked with intelligence gathering, enforcement operations, public enlightenment campaigns, and collaboration with security agencies. Yusuf assured the committee of adequate funding and support to effectively carry out its responsibilities.
