Enugu Islamic Scholar Arrested Over N100m Fraud Allegations

Alhaji Musa Ani, a 74-year-old Islamic scholar and director of the Islam Centre in Uwani, Enugu, was arrested by the Enugu State Police Command on allegations of misappropriating N100 million. His arrest occurred on a Friday, following a petition from Alhaji Ezeani Ibrahim, a tenant at the Islam Centre, who accused Ani of misappropriating funds.

The Muslim community in Enugu has described the allegations as baseless and expressed embarrassment over Ani's detention. They argue that the Islam Centre relies solely on donations for its operations.

Civil rights groups have condemned the arrest, labeling it unlawful and criticizing the police for compromising professional standards. They demand Ani's immediate release to allow him to fulfill his religious obligations during Ramadan.

The situation has led to internal disputes within the Muslim community, with calls for intervention from Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah. The police have not responded to requests for comments regarding the case.
