California Celebration Honors 50 Years of Friendship

The celebration of Mrs. Fola Olukanni's birthday in California served as a poignant reminder of a friendship that began over 50 years ago among Segun Olukanni, Femi Olukanni, and the author.

Their connection originated in the early 1970s in Ebute Metta, Lagos, where they shared a passion for football. They played at Olaleye Boys’ Club and later at 7 Pillars Boys’ Club under Brother Afolabi, where they learned valuable life skills such as discipline and teamwork.

The group included notable players like Stephen Keshi and Andrew Uti, who later represented Nigeria at international competitions, including the Gothia Cup in Sweden and the Dallas Cup in the United States. Despite their later rivalry in the Principals’ Cup, the enduring friendships formed during their youth remain significant, showcasing the lasting impact of their shared experiences in football.
