Nigeria Launches New Security Threat Assessment Committee

The Presidential Committee on the National Threat Assessment and Five-Year Strategic Defence Operations Plan was inaugurated on a Wednesday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The committee has a crucial 90-day assignment to produce a comprehensive National Threat Assessment and a rolling Five-Year Strategic Defence Operations Plan.

Its mandate includes identifying existing and emerging threats, assessing their urgency, establishing operational priorities, and determining necessary personnel, equipment, and logistics. The committee is also tasked with recommending procurement priorities and creating mechanisms for monitoring progress.

Despite previous efforts by successive Nigerian governments to strengthen national security, challenges have persisted, particularly in the North, where terrorism and violent crime have increased. The Tinubu administration aims to overhaul Nigeria's defense and security architecture, emphasizing anticipation over reaction to threats.
