Tinubu Inaugurates Security Committee for National Threats

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has established the Presidential Committee on National Threat Assessment and Five-Year Strategic Defence Operations Plan, giving it a 90-day deadline to produce a comprehensive security assessment and medium-term defence blueprint for Nigeria. The committee was inaugurated by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who emphasized the need for professionalism, objectivity, urgency, and patriotism in their work.

Akume described the committee’s mandate as a national priority, aimed at enhancing Nigeria's capability to anticipate and respond to security threats. He noted the interconnected nature of contemporary threats and the necessity for a unified approach among defense, intelligence, and security agencies.

The committee is tasked with developing a system where assessed threats dictate operational objectives, which in turn define the required military and security capabilities. The National Threat Assessment will provide an objective account of dangers facing Nigeria and recommend appropriate government responses.
