Newborn Baby Rescued from Abandonment in Benue Forest

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a carton near Ashar forest in Wuese community, Konshisha Local Government Area, Benue State. Mrs Mbakasev Yisa, a passerby, discovered the infant and alerted a nearby police outpost.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that maggots were present around the baby, suggesting she had been left there for some time. Terkumbur Mbaukaan, a local councillor, reported that the baby was in extremely critical condition upon rescue.

The police documented the incident and ensured the infant was taken to Dooshima Clinic, where she is receiving glucose and NAN infant formula while being stabilized in the Intensive Care Unit. Mbaukaan has contributed financially to her care and called for support from individuals and organizations.

The community has requested that local police not escalate the matter to higher authorities for now. The identity of the baby's mother and the circumstances of her abandonment remain unknown.
