Abia State University Suspends Lecturer Over Pay Claims

Abia State University, located in Uturu, suspended Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze from the Department of Economics due to his Facebook comments about the pay of lecturers at the institution. The university's Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Officer, Chijioke Nwogu, issued a statement indicating that the suspension was due to concerns over social media posts deemed harmful to the university's interests.

Nwaeze claimed that ABSU lecturers were among the lowest-paid in Nigeria, still receiving salaries under the 2009 ASUU-Federal Government salary structure while being taxed at the 2024 rate. He noted that a new salary structure approved in December 2025 was not yet implemented.

Nwaeze alleged that many lecturers had not received salaries corresponding to their promotions and that some had outstanding salaries for up to 44 months. He also mentioned that union dues were not being remitted and that professors at ABSU earned significantly less than their counterparts in other universities.

The university management has formed an investigative panel to look into the matter, with the suspension taking immediate effect.
