Kano Court Adjourns Medical Negligence Suit to 2026

A Kano State High Court sitting on Miller Road has adjourned the medical negligence suit against the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre until November 13, 2026, due to the absence of the government’s lawyers and the defendants' failure to file their defense within the court's prescribed timeframe. The suit was initiated following the death of Aisha Umar in September 2025, who died during corrective surgery to remove scissors allegedly left inside her abdomen from a previous operation at the facility.

Barrister Faiza Yunusa Yusuf, representing the plaintiff, expressed frustration over the delay, noting that the defendants neither filed their defense nor appeared in court. Under the Kano State High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, the period for filing a defense has expired, leading to the adjournment.

Aisha Umar's husband, Abubakar Muhammad, expressed disappointment regarding the state government's lack of commitment, highlighting that an investigative committee set up in January has yet to release its report.
