Karmo Sabo Leader Appeals to Wike Over Market Demolition

Chief Umar Garni Sarkin Karmo, the Village Head of Karmo Sabo in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), has urged the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to intervene against the proposed demolition of the community market. Sarkin Karmo expressed concerns that relocating traders to a privately owned facility in Old Karmo could incite communal disputes, as Karmo Sabo, Old Karmo, and neighboring Idu-Koro are distinct districts.
He revealed that the Development Control had informed community representatives about the demolition approval and highlighted that the alternative market may be financially inaccessible for many traders, some of whom have as little as N10,000 to invest. Sarkin Karmo questioned the sustainability of a proposed six-month free occupancy arrangement and argued that traditional markets should coexist with modern facilities, citing examples from Dei Dei and Karu.
He called for a peaceful resolution and urged the authorities to allow the existing Tuesday Karmo Market to remain while addressing roadside trading issues.
