Joseph Tegbe Announces Major Power Projects for Abuja, Lagos

On October 29, Power Minister Joseph Tegbe announced that new electricity projects approved for Abuja and Lagos will necessitate months of transformer production before improvements can be delivered to consumers. The Federal Executive Council approved three projects during its meeting on October 28, which include works at Katampe in Abuja, the supply of three high-capacity transformers for the Lagos network, and a transmission line upgrade along the Lagos–Sagamu corridor.
Tegbe stated that the 300MVA transformers must be specially manufactured, a process expected to take between three and six months, which includes production, delivery, installation, and testing. The Katampe project will involve underground and overhead double-circuit lines connected to the transmission substation.
The Lagos–Sagamu corridor will see a 35.6-kilometre, 132kV line reconstructed from a single-circuit to a double-circuit configuration to meet additional electricity demand. The approval for the Lagos transformers includes design, manufacture, and supply, but the exact receiving substation remains to be confirmed.
Tegbe noted that Nigeria does not currently produce such large transformers domestically, necessitating overseas manufacturing.
