Federal Government Boosts Kano's Power Supply with New Substations

The federal government has added 544MW of electricity transmission capacity in Kano with the inauguration of four substations and the reconnection of Lee Group to the national grid after more than 30 years of off-grid operations. The substations, located at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan-Agundi, were inaugurated by the Federal Ministry of Power through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in partnership with the Kano State Government.
Adeola Labzy, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, stated that these investments reflect the administration’s commitment to enhancing electricity infrastructure. The new substation at Walalambe has two 40MVA transformers providing 80MW of capacity, while Kumbotso has received additional infrastructure including 300MVA and 100MVA transformers.
The projects aim to ease congestion at overloaded substations and improve electricity supply to industrial and residential areas. A new 132/33kV transmission substation in Mashi Local Government Area of Katsina is scheduled for completion in March 2027.
