ActionAid Nigeria Demands Amendments to Electoral Act 2026

ActionAid Nigeria, represented by Stella Oduem, has rejected the recently passed Electoral Act 2026, which was signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu less than twenty-four hours after its passage in the National Assembly. The organization, through its country director Andrew Mamedu, criticized the speed of the law's enactment, stating it does not reflect the views of major Nigerian stakeholders and demands immediate amendments.

Mamedu emphasized that the law will fundamentally shape Nigeria's democratic future and that the rushed process did not allow for adequate review of relevant statutory institutions, including the Attorney General, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the Federal Ministry of Finance. He highlighted concerns regarding the legal and financial implications of implementing the law hastily.

ActionAid Nigeria called on President Tinubu and members of the National Assembly to initiate amendments that genuinely reflect the aspirations of Nigerians, warning that the current form of the act could further erode public trust in the electoral process.
