ActionAid Calls for Probe into Nigerian Exploitation in Russia

ActionAid Nigeria has called for an immediate investigation by the Federal Government and international authorities into allegations that Nigerian women were deceptively recruited into Russia’s Alabuga Start Programme. These women reportedly faced exploitation, unsafe working conditions, and were involved in military drone production.

The organization highlighted concerns regarding Konstantin Trifonov, a senior recruiter linked to Telegram channels promoting child sexual abuse material. Dr. Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, stated that vulnerable young Africans, including Nigerians, were lured with promises of education and lucrative employment but faced exploitation upon arrival in Russia.

ActionAid noted the need for swift investigations, emphasizing that those responsible for trafficking and exploitation must be prosecuted. The organization also pointed to broader issues related to Nigeria’s “Japa” migration trend, driven by poverty and unemployment, which exposes job seekers to trafficking.

According to IOM, over 65,700 Nigerians have returned since 2017, with many requiring reintegration assistance.
