The African Democratic Congress has signalled it will pursue an independent path in the 2027 presidential race rather than merge with other opposition parties to challenge President Bola Tinubu. Bolaji Abdullahi, the party's national spokesperson, expressed confidence during a television interview that the ADC's candidate, Atiku Abubakar, possesses sufficient support to secure victory without forming alliances with rival opposition groups.

Abdullahi's statement came days before opposition parties were scheduled to gather at the Yar'Adua Civic Centre in Abuja for a conference aimed at building consensus around a unified opposition strategy. The timing underscores divisions within the opposition camp over whether individual parties should prioritise their own electoral prospects or combine forces to increase chances of unseating the incumbent president.

In separate comments to the BBC, Atiku indicated the matter remained a question of strategic calculation rather than principle. He suggested ongoing internal discussions within opposition ranks, hinting that positions could shift depending on how negotiations develop.

The ADC's public posture frames independence as a demonstration of party strength, though Abdullahi acknowledged that a coalition arrangement might theoretically improve the opposition's electoral position. Peter Obi and the Nigeria Democratic Congress have similarly resisted pressure to commit to a broad coalition framework, each emphasizing their distinct organisational capabilities and voter appeal.

The competing positions highlight a fundamental strategic disagreement within Nigeria's opposition about whether unity serves their electoral interests or dilutes individual party platforms ahead of an election cycle expected to centre on performance comparisons against Tinubu's administration.
