Opposition Unity Efforts for 2027 Elections Stall

Plans to unite Nigeria's opposition parties for the 2027 general election are facing significant challenges after key figures failed to attend a summit in Abuja. The meeting, organized by a coalition known as G-100, aimed to produce a joint presidential candidate ahead of the January 16 elections.

Notably absent were the candidates from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including Peter Obi. This summit was the second attempt at forming an opposition alliance, following a previous meeting in Ibadan on April 25, which was also poorly attended.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) quickly dismissed the coalition's efforts, with National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru stating that the proposal for a single candidate would fail. Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, expressed skepticism about the coalition's viability, citing the large ambitions of its leaders.

The PDP, led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, distanced itself from the G-100 summit, indicating little hope for the coalition's success.
