Military Personnel Salary Increase to Boost Security Efforts

General Christopher Musa, the Minister of Defence, has called on personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces to regard the recently approved salary increase as a renewed call to duty in the fight against national security threats. This historic salary increment, approved by President Bola Tinubu, ranges from 30 to 80 percent and is set to take effect on September 1, 2026, benefiting around 250,000 military personnel across the three services.

The salary structure prioritizes frontline personnel, with junior ranks receiving an 80 percent increase, middle-ranking officers and non-commissioned officers getting a 50 percent increase, and senior military leadership receiving a 30 percent adjustment. Musa emphasized that this decision reflects the administration's commitment to security sector reform and troop welfare, increasing the annual personnel cost from N660 billion to N924 billion.

He expressed confidence that this financial boost would positively impact operations against insurgency, banditry, oil theft, and kidnapping throughout the country.
