Tinubu Approves Up to 80% Pay Rise for Armed Forces

President Bola Tinubu has approved significant salary increases for approximately 250,000 personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with changes ranging from 30% to 80%. This new pay structure, effective from September 1, 2026, includes a 30% increase for officers above the rank of colonel, a 50% increase for personnel from colonel down to warrant officer, and an 80% increase for ranks from Private to Staff Sergeant.

The annual salary bill for the Armed Forces will rise from N660 billion to N924 billion. Tinubu emphasized the importance of supporting and appreciating the sacrifices made by military personnel in combating banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.

He stated that the administration would prioritize troop welfare and modernize the armed forces. The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), had previously indicated the government's intention to raise military salaries, reflecting ongoing efforts to ensure adequate remuneration for service members.
