NIWA Targets Water Hyacinth Clearance in Lagos and Other States to Ensure Safe Inland Waterways Navigation

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is focusing on clearing water hyacinth in Lagos, Bayelsa, Niger, and other states to ensure safe inland waterways navigation. Water hyacinth, a fast-spreading aquatic weed native to the Amazon Basin, has been obstructing waterways, impacting fisheries and local livelihoods.

NIWA has initiated clearance operations in Lagos and plans to extend to other affected areas. Heavy machinery is being deployed to clear navigational channels and restore safe passage for boats.

The effort aims to enhance safety, prevent engine damage, and mitigate risks for water users.
