Fagbemi Launches NHRC-NPF Liaison Framework in Abuja

On Wednesday, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Fagbemi, inaugurated the National Human Rights Commission–Nigeria Police Force (NHRC–NPF) Liaison Framework at the NHRC headquarters in Abuja. He described the initiative as a landmark effort to strengthen institutional cooperation, promote accountability, and enhance respect for human rights within Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

Fagbemi emphasized that sustainable reforms can only be achieved through partnerships between institutions. He acknowledged that many complaints received by the NHRC involve alleged violations by law enforcement.

The framework aims to improve communication between the NHRC and the Police, facilitate prompt complaint resolution, enhance oversight of detention facilities, and address systemic human rights challenges. Fagbemi highlighted the importance of preventive measures in justice sector reforms and stated that successful implementation requires clear responsibilities and sustained commitment from all involved institutions.

He reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Justice’s support for collaboration among various stakeholders in the justice system.
