Cemetery Manager and Accomplice Arrested for Theft

Nsikak Effiong and Elijah Edet, the manager of Mbiokporo Cemetery, were arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for allegedly conspiring to exhume a freshly buried corpse with the intent to sell the casket for financial gain. The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 11:30 PM in Nsit-Ibom after a vigilant operative reported suspicious activities at the cemetery.

Effiong was apprehended while his accomplice, Effiong Asuquo, fled the scene. During interrogation, Nsikak Effiong confessed to unlawfully exhuming the corpse and stealing the casket.

The police recovered the empty casket and the unregistered motorcycle used in the crime. Further investigation led to the arrest of Elijah Edet on Wednesday at about 5:00 PM, who admitted to conspiring with grave diggers in the crime, claiming it was his first involvement in such activity.

Commissioner of Police Baba Azare condemned the incident, describing it as barbaric and directed a comprehensive investigation.
