Cemetery Manager and Accomplice Arrested for Theft

On August 3, 2026, at approximately 11:30 pm, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command arrested Nsikak Effiong and Elijah Edet, the manager of Mbiokporo Cemetery, for allegedly exhuming a freshly buried corpse and stealing its casket for financial gain. The arrest followed a distress call from a vigilante operative who observed two men transporting a casket on an unregistered motorcycle.

Upon confrontation, one suspect, Effiong Asuquo, fled, while Nsikak Effiong was apprehended. During police interrogation, Effiong confessed to the crime, stating they had unlawfully exhumed the corpse and intended to sell the casket.

The police recovered the empty casket and the motorcycle. Further investigation led to Edet's arrest on August 5, 2026, where he admitted to conspiring with the grave diggers, claiming it was his first involvement in such activities.

The police are continuing their investigation to identify all individuals involved.
