Ikot Abasi Community Urges Tinubu to Reopen ALSCON

Community leader Mr. Uyiota Abraham from Ikot Abasi Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State has formally appealed to President Bola Tinubu to reopen the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON).

The plant has been non-operational since 2013 due to severe gas supply shortages and prolonged legal disputes regarding ownership that have lasted two decades. Mr.

Abraham lamented the hardships faced by the community due to the shutdown and emphasized the economic benefits that reopening ALSCON would bring to Nigeria. He urged the President to resolve the legal disputes that have hindered the company's operations.

The community has also expressed appreciation for UC Rusal's management of ALSCON, particularly for various skill acquisition programs aimed at empowering the youth in Ikot Abasi. These initiatives include training in forklift operation, mechanical work, welding, and ICT scholarships for students to study in Russia.

The community seeks urgent action to address the gas supply challenges affecting ALSCON's ability to resume aluminum production.
