Senate Clash Over Fasina's Ambassador Confirmation

On Thursday, a disagreement arose in the Nigerian Senate between Godswill Akpabio and Adams Oshiomhole regarding the confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassador. Oshiomhole raised concerns about endorsing a nominee facing sexual harassment allegations, arguing that it would send the wrong message to Nigerian women.

He emphasized the sensitivity of the matter, noting that two women had made different allegations against Fasina, which should be addressed before proceeding with the confirmation. Oshiomhole recalled a previous disagreement shortly before the confirmation of Fasina, who is the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti.

The Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired by Sani Bello, presented the report that led to the consideration of Fasina's nomination, which was supported by Simon Lalong.
