Protesters Demand Senate Halt Fasina's Confirmation

On Tuesday, protesters gathered at the National Assembly in Abuja, urging the Senate to suspend the confirmation of Prof. Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassador.

This protest stems from allegations of sexual harassment against Fasina, which are currently under judicial review. The protesters, representing various civil society organizations, emphasized that the Senate should defer the confirmation until the court cases are resolved.

Amira Adeyemo, a legal practitioner speaking for the coalition, stated that the protest was not driven by personal animosity but rather a call for justice and due process. Dr.

Ernest Ogaz argued that the Senate should reject the nomination outright, citing the unresolved court cases as damaging to Nigeria's international reputation. Emmanuella Azu from a women's rights group submitted a petition to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, urging the suspension of the nomination.

The coalition consists of 500 civil society organizations advocating for the protection of victims of sexual misconduct.
