Women’s Groups Reject Senate Confirmation of Fasina

Over 300 women’s rights organizations have condemned the Nigerian Senate's confirmation of Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The groups, led by Wumi Asubiaro-Dada of Womanifesto, argue that the Senate ignored pending sexual harassment cases against Fasina and due process. Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirmed Fasina, claiming no opposition from Lagos State, no petitions against him, presumption of innocence, and clearance from the police and FUOYE Governing Council.

The coalition disputes these claims, asserting that Fasina is from Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, not Lagos. They referenced two petitions submitted on June 25 and June 29, 2026, and two pending suits at the National Industrial Court related to sexual harassment.

The petitioners criticized the Senate for not inviting complainants or civil society groups to the confirmation hearing, violating the right to fair hearing as per Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution. The ICPC is also investigating the allegations.
