Senate Confirms Abayomi Fasina as Ambassador Amid Allegations

On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate confirmed Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador. This decision came despite allegations of sexual harassment against him.

Senator Simon Lalong, representing Plateau South, presented the report from the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Senator Sani Bello. Lalong stated that the committee received petitions supporting Fasina's nomination and that investigations by the Nigerian Police Force found the allegations to be false.

He emphasized that Fasina had performed excellently and deserved the confirmation. However, Senator Adam Oshiomhole from Edo North opposed the confirmation, arguing that the Senate should wait for a court clearance before proceeding, as endorsing the nomination would be insensitive to women.

Senator Cyril Fasuyi from Ekiti North urged caution, highlighting the importance of justice for women. Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, supported the committee's position, and the nomination was ultimately approved through a voice vote.
