Senate Confirms Fasina as Ambassador Amid Protests

On a recent Thursday, the Nigerian Senate confirmed Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina as a Non-Career Ambassador and High Commissioner of Nigeria, amidst significant public outcry and protests from women’s rights organizations. The protests called for the suspension of his confirmation due to ongoing legal allegations of sexual misconduct, abuse of office, and victimization by former female staff members of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).

During the Senate proceedings, Senator Simon Lalong presented the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs' report, stating that relevant authorities, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, had cleared Fasina of the allegations. However, Senator Adams Oshiomhole expressed concerns about confirming Fasina before judicial determinations, emphasizing the need for public sensitivity given the serious nature of the allegations.

Despite the tensions, the Senate ultimately confirmed Fasina's nomination overwhelmingly.
