Akwa Ibom Assembly Rehabilitation Stalled Amid Tourism Projects

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Complex has remained largely idle for nine months after lawmakers and staff vacated for a rehabilitation project that has seen little progress, despite a total allocation of N15.47 billion. Governor Umo Eno first expressed concern about the complex's condition on 1 July 2024, promising rehabilitation that began after a year.

A circular from the Clerk of the House, NsikakAbasi Orok, directed occupants to vacate by 24 October 2025, with rehabilitation set to commence on 27 October. The contractor, represented by Ochemba Lee, indicated a six-month completion timeline, which expired in April 2026, yet work remains unfinished.

During a recent visit on 7 August, no construction activity was observed at the complex, while nearby, N248.83 billion is being invested in three hospitality projects. The exposed roof section of the assembly complex shows weather damage, and the premises are being used for recreational activities instead of legislative functions.
