Akwa Ibom Launches Ibom Medical City Project for Healthcare

The Ibom Medical City Project was unveiled by Akwa Ibom State, with a launch ceremony scheduled for June 23, 2026. Dr.

Aniekan Umanah described the project as a strategic investment designed to strengthen healthcare delivery and promote medical innovation, positioning Akwa Ibom State as a leading destination for quality healthcare services and medical tourism in Africa. The project will be located along Uyo-Ikot Ekpen Road and will feature a 10-storey, 350-bed international hospital with 24 specialty departments, residential accommodations for healthcare professionals, a medical research training center, and pharmaceutical laboratories.

Digital health infrastructure will also be included to support advanced healthcare delivery. The project is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Health and the House of Special Duties, and it follows stakeholder endorsements during a town hall meeting organized by the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health in July 2025.

The initiative aims to improve healthcare outcomes and enhance Nigeria's reputation as a destination for world-class medical services.
