Alake Urges Calm After Abuja Earth Tremor, Assures Safety

Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, called for calm among residents of the Federal Capital Territory following an earth tremor that occurred in parts of Abuja on Tuesday. Alake instructed the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to provide him with hourly updates on seismic activities in the area for ongoing assessment and necessary engagement with relevant government agencies.

The NGSA confirmed that several buildings experienced vibrations due to the tremor detected at 11:23:27 a.m. on August 4, originating from a depth of one kilometer and traveling four kilometers within five seconds. While currently in Washington, D.C. for discussions with American investors, Alake reassured residents that proactive measures are in place to protect lives and property.

The NGSA classified the tremor as a light event of I to II magnitude on the Mercalli scale, indicating it poses no significant threat, only discomfort. The agency will continue monitoring the situation, encouraging residents to maintain normal activities without fear.
