NGSA Confirms No Ongoing Seismic Threat in Abuja

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory that the earth tremor recorded in parts of Abuja on August 4, 2023, has completely subsided, and there is no ongoing seismic threat. Prof. Olusegun Ige, the Director-General of NGSA, stated that the tremor, which occurred at 11:23:27 AM and lasted about five seconds, was a “low-energy, transient micro-event” originating from a depth of less than one kilometer.

Following the tremor, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, directed the NGSA to provide hourly updates on seismic developments. Ige confirmed that monitoring continued for over five days, revealing only baseline seismic noise.

Inspections at various locations, including the Defence Intelligence Agency facility and NNPC Towers, found no structural damage or injuries. Ige emphasized that while geological stresses can cause localized seismic events, the characteristics of the August 4 tremor did not indicate a destructive earthquake.
