Abuja Tremor: NGSA Confirms No Ongoing Threat to Residents

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), under the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, assured residents of Abuja that the earth tremor recorded on August 4, 2026, has completely subsided and poses no threat to lives and property. This assurance followed over five days of seismic monitoring and field assessments.

Professor Olusegun Ige, the director-general of NGSA, reported that the tremor was recorded at 11:23:27 a.m. on August 4, lasting approximately five seconds and originating from a depth of less than one kilometer. The event was characterized as a low-energy, transient micro-event.

Dr. Dele Alake, the minister, had directed NGSA to provide hourly updates on seismic developments. The agency confirmed no structural damage or injuries at assessed locations, including the Defence Intelligence Agency facility and NNPC Towers.

Preliminary geological analysis suggested the tremor resulted from the release of accumulated stresses within the earth's crust, but it did not indicate a destructive earthquake.
