Obi Demands Transparency on Tinubu's Past Records

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, issued a statement on August 31, 2026, questioning President Bola Tinubu's decision to seek the withholding of records concerning his past from a foreign court. Obi expressed that Nigerians deserve answers on issues of public interest, particularly regarding the President's educational records.

He emphasized that a sitting President should confront inquiries about their past rather than evade scrutiny through legal means. Obi described it as "profoundly embarrassing" that a President would request a foreign court to withhold such records, especially those related to legitimate public interest.

He called for "clear, credible, and verifiable explanations" regarding unresolved educational issues, including primary and secondary schooling. Obi also highlighted the negative example such controversies could set for young Nigerians, asserting that the Presidency should embody integrity, accountability, and transparency.

He concluded by stating that the integrity of the Republic must take precedence over individual interests.
